A griffin (also spelled griffon or gryphon) is a creature with the body of a lion and the wings and head of an eagle. In some cases, it has the legs of a lion or, in other cases, the hind-legs of a lion and feathered forelegs with eagle talons. Like dragons, they are fond of treasure and will keep hoards of it in their mountain lairs. They appeared on many coat of arms in the middle ages, along with lions, dragons , wyverns and other creatures of heraldry.
A hippogriff is the offspring of a griffin and a horse. This is very unusual since horses are griffins' favorite type of prey
